Obama re-brands America

For years, many of those who follow the nation brands phenomenon have bemoaned the loss of American credibility and subsequent brand strength in the world. There were many symptoms of Brand America’s power loss: Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, Axis of Evil, Florida, Shock and Awe, Hurricane Katrina. Then along comes one guy who steps into this media and mind space to reboot Amerca’s image in the world in just a manner of a year.

I have heard that some people remember talking about it and most of the other people have no idea. I was at the last class I do not recollect any mention of the groups or the assignments.

If you are still looking for a final project idea, here is your chance.

State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) has a video challenge, where you are expected to complete the phrase "Democracy is...." with a short video of 3 minutes. You are free to use any story telling style including, fiction, documentary, comedy, music video or animation.

The six publicly identified winners, (one each from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, Middle East/North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South & Central Asia, East Asia/Pacific), will travel to the United States to claim their prize in the fall of 2010.

Social Marketing within Frangible Societies

I hope that after this week's lecture we are all more aware of the importance of communications to international soft and smart power.

We briefly touched in class how the web and social media are coming into play with Public Diplomacy.

Social Marketing within Frangible Societies
(a case study of the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur’s (UNAMID) Strategic Communications Division)

Major Andrew Duprey (BFA ’87 Professional Writing), US Army Special Operations Command, will first review the definitions of social marketing and frangible society as well as challenges and implications in overarching terms that would apply in a universal construct. These topics would include, but not be limited to, language, culture, legitimacy, demilitarization, and re-integration. The second half of the presentation will be participatory in nature. Students will divide into small groups that will “become” the nucleus of the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur’s (UNAMID) Strategic Communications Division. They will independently develop a campaign plan to communicate critical issues to indigenous persons of the Darfur region for the UN Forces Commander. They will then present their ideas to the class at large and discuss the challenges and implications of their decisions.

Welcome aboard!

Hi everyone,

I would like to start by introducing myself and welcoming all of you to our blog on Public Diplomacy.

My name is Efe Sevin. I am currently a visiting scholar in Emerson College (Boston, MA, USA) under the Fulbright program. With a background of international relations, current studies in political communication and being a "Fulbrighter" as an occupation, I spend most of my time working on public diplomacy and political communication concepts.

This semester, I am working with Dr. Gregory Payne on CC 471 Public Diplomacy Seminar. Our class met for the third time this Wednesday, and I am really glad to say that we have enjoyed another week of lively discussions.

This blog is created as a platform for the students of CC 471 to share their ideas! I invite all the authors to introduce themselves and to start blogging!
